How Amaranth Has The Potential To Save Millions Of Sharks

5AM Provisions, Inc. launched their online store

SAN FRANCISCO, Ca., July 2, 20155AM Provisions, Inc. is on the mission to stop the killing of millions of sharks every year with the help of amaranth oil. Sharks, in particular deep-sea sharks, are hunted for their nutrient squalene. Deep-sea sharks have large amounts of squalene in their livers, which enables them to live in depths below 3,000 feet. Squalene is a nutrient that helps to transport oxygen and to build new cells. The cosmetic and toiletry industry uses the squalene for it’s moisturizing, anti-aging, and emulsion benefits.

“When I started working with amaranth, I didn’t know that amaranth contained squalene, I didn’t even know what squalene was,” says Waldemar Juschin, founder of 5AM Provisions, Inc., “a quick google search showed me a study by Dr. Bikul Das talking about the health benefits and anti-cancer properties. With a bit more research, I came across Lily Cole @lilycole, a model from the UK that is actively pushing large cosmetic brands to ban the use of squalene in their products.”

Amaranth is often known as an ancient grain, gluten-free grain, and a grain that is filled with iron, magnesium, zinc, potassium, and calcium. 5AM Provisions, Inc. created this infographic to get a basic understanding of amaranth:

The Discovery Channel is airing #SharkWeek this July 5th. “We launched our online store a few days before #SharkWeek and hope that it will help us raise awareness about the use of squalene in cosmetic and toiletry products,” says Waldemar Juschin.

Amaranth oil has the highest plant-based source of squalene, with quantities of up to 8%. The second highest plant-base source for squalene comes from olive oil, with up to 0.7% and argan oil with up to 0.4%. The issues with olive oil as a source for squalene is that it creates lot’s of waste. Amaranth oil on the other hand has already such high amounts that it doesn’t need to be refined, leading to no waste at all. Amaranth oil is also high in vitamin e, has on average 40-50% linoleic acid, 22-26% oleic acid, 16-22% palmitic acid, and 2-5% stearic acid – all properties that the cosmetic industry wants.

“We hope that Leonardo DiCaprio @LeoDiCaprio and other influential people that are actively working towards preserving our ocean’s ecosystem will lend their voice to raise awareness about the use of squalene,” says Waldemar Juschin.
