The Glenholme School Offers Special Needs Education Emphasizing Inclusion And Acceptance

Boarding School Focuses on an Inclusive Learning Environment to Stimulate Successful Societal Integration

WASHINGTON, CT – JANUARY 14, 2014 –The Glenholme School, a therapeutic boarding school for young people with special needs, employs a unique approach to fostering the development of its students. While some schools emphasize the differences between their students, Glenholme chooses to focus on the inclusive education experience that students deserve and thrive in. The school firmly believes that by emphasizing inclusion and acceptance, while teaching the importance of independence and responsibility, students will learn the skills they need for successful integration into society.

The students of Glenholme are given the tools to experience school just like any other child would. “Students are not treated as people with special needs here; they are treated as individuals who deserve a chance to succeed,” states Maryann Campbell, Executive Director of The Glenholme School. “The only difference between Glenholme and a traditional school is the students.”

Glenholme teaches children how to thrive in a world that is not always accepting of them. One set of grateful parents said, “The Glenholme School provided the hope, support, and education our family desperately needed, and most importantly, it reassured our son that he would be accepted for who he was, and not for what he has. Our son feels safe, accepted, and valued by his school and peer community.”

Acceptance is the essence of Glenholme; students are encouraged to participate in activities that were previously off limits to them in traditional learning environments as a result of not being allowed to join or seldom being picked for a particular team. Everyone at Glenholme is treated equally; there are no favorites, and there are no exclusions based on differences. Glenholme students are granted an inclusive learning experience filled with a plethora of educational, social, recreational, artistic, and community activities.

Students at Glenholme are taught skills that are needed for self sufficience, and are held accountable for various responsibilities. They take care of each other, and a sense of shared responsibility is learned. The skills learned at The Glenholme School are carried with students throughout their lives. Graduates have been prepared for life after Glenholme, and can follow a variety of paths including college. The Glenholme School provides high quality programs, services and resources in safe and supportive environments which empower individuals to lead fulfilling and rewarding lives.
