Westchester Community College Foundation and A-HOME Join Nonprofit Westchester

NPW welcomes county’s largest educational institution and vital affordable housing advocate

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. (August 2014) – As Nonprofit Westchester (NPW) continues to advocate for nonprofits while also providing educational and networking opportunities for them throughout the county, membership continues to increase for the umbrella organization. A-HOME and Westchester Community College Foundation are NPW’s newest members.

“These two organizations are vital to our community – one organization that strengthens our community by providing people with safe and affordable places to live and another organization that provides education to residents helping them to enter the workforce. We are very pleased to welcome them to our membership,” said Joanna Straub, NPW Executive Director.

Founded in 1985 by volunteers who saw the need for permanent affordable housing for seniors and disabled individuals in northern Westchester County, A-HOME today is run by a professional staff whose work is supplemented by volunteer activities. The nonprofit organization provides safe, affordable rental housing in northern Westchester by purchasing, developing and managing properties. Its current programs include independent supportive living for low-income, older adults and disabled individuals as well as apartments for single parent families. Through A-HOME’s case management and linkages with human service agencies, it has the ability to provide the needed support that helps individuals live as independently as their potential allows.

Westchester Community College is the county’s largest educational institution with more than 60 Associate Degree and Certificate Programs leading to employment or transfer opportunities at some of the country’s leading colleges and universities. Each year, approximately 24,000 students come to the college to prepare for new careers, to improve their lives, to have fun and to reach for their dreams. It provides accessible, high quality and affordable education to meet the needs of the county’s diverse community. The college is committed to student success, academic excellence, workforce development, economic development and lifelong learning.

Nonprofit organizations are vital to the economy in Westchester County. A report recently released by NPW and Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies found that 53,987 people, or 13.6 percent of the county’s total workforce is employed by nonprofits. Additionally, the sector generated $6.9 billion in revenues.
